Donīt Be Scared, Itīs About Life

It is not often that the veteran industrial label Dependent signs an album, months after it has been originally released in another territory. Actually, in the 14 year old history of the label, it has never happened at all. This hints that the new Dependent signing CHRYSALIDE must be something special, as the album had been released in France in late 2011 already.

Due to the extraordinary quality of the album “Don’t Be Scared – It’s About Life” CHRYSALIDE managed to launch a slow burning sleeperhits in France and soon found as rare US license partner, as well as Dependent now handling the rest of Europe. Additionally CHRYSALIDE is one of the very few bands that manage to project their harsh electronics and vocals onto stage in a believable manner that really does their music justice. No wonder they had
the ability to play a handful of key shows in Germany even before the album was officially released.

The French trio CHRYSALIDE is an exception in the industrial genre, as they manage to combine elements of Hiphop and Dubstep with harsh and noisy industrial music and vocals. Although leaning onto pioneers like Skinny Puppy or Velvet Acid Christ, CHRYSALIDE manage to create a unique and believable wall of aggression on their record. Unlike their Canadian Inspiration the CHRYSALIDE sound is more based on drums, grooves and
rhythmic guitar samples than on samples, strings and sequencing chaos. It becomes noticeable that there is a full generation separating the Young CHRYSALIDE from the likes of Skinny Puppy. Equipped with this heavy load of electronics drums, and distorted vocal mayhem.

But not only the sound design steers clear of simple categorizations, also the bands album topics of globalization, European economy, and the effect of a vicious financial market onto the yet helpless individual shows that CHRYSALIDE prefer their samples and lyrics way off the beaten path. Summarizing its qualities, “Don’t Be Scared – It’s About life” is not only a vindicating statement against preset sounds and old-school styles, but also a manifest of true musical and artistic authenticity.
CHRYSALIDE don’t look like one of the revelations in this scene in 2012, they are probably THE REVELATION of this year.

There will be two versions of “Don’t Be Scared – It’s About Life” on the Dependent label, a regular CD edition and a very limited Double-CD collectors edition, containing preciously unreleased bonus tracks.
Both are now available for pre-order at our shop. Only the regular edition will be available from November 2 at all record stores.

The biography of Chrysalide:

In literature, the Cyberpunk genre began in the early 80’s. In music, the Cyberpunk genre began in 2003 with the birth of the hybrid project of the brothers Arco & Syco Trauma - Chrysalide.

Chapter one: The larva crawls.

Having founded the Audiotrauma collective in 2002, (an organisation and underground label directed to the digital and corrosive cultures based in Strasbourg, France), both brothers brought together themes and ideas that would become Chrysalide. This French word comes from the Greek language meaning gold because butterflies often have a brighter pupa than other insects. It expresses a metaphor on the human race – how behind every worm, who we are, there is a butterfly. If apathy does not overcome us, there is that possibility of growing in to a butterfly.

Drawing their roots from the dark, violent and committed electronic music scene, they quickly made this project in to a constantly changing creature without limits.

Chrysalide's first release, the 'Lost EP', was released in 2005 on Audiotrauma records. The name fits as, at present, there are few remaining copies available. The release expresses themes of a preference towards a dystopian vision, the devastation of the consumer society, the alienation and the dependence on new technologies and the quest of finding oneself in a complex world with very dark horizons.

Chapter two: The larva begins to weave its cocoon.

After 2 years of concerts in four corners of Europe, sound experiments, and other internal experiences, Chrysalide released their first album 'Lost in a lost world' (Available on Audiotrauma records). Although a continuation of the 'Lost EP', Arco and Syco released an album that was less repetitive and a lot richer sounding than their first EP.

Although the media boasted that Chrysalide seemed to be the natural successors to Skinny Puppy, Chrysalide had many other different facets, even though Skinny Puppy remain an influence. They progressed by creating new sounds and new environments, which enabled them to reach out to a larger and varied audience.

Chapter three: The cocoon is weaved

Working as a duo, Chrysalide found certain freedoms, but also realised working this way that there were limits to what they could achieve, and in 2009 they decided to add Amnesy (ex Neon Cage Experiment) to the band.

The fusion is immediate. Amnesy finds his place in the creative process quickly, particularly in the visual aspect of Chrysalide. With this new inspiration in the process, the trio decide to head back in to the studio to create a new album, and in 2011 produce 'Don’t Be Scared It’s About Life'.

It was already difficult to attach a particular sound to Chrysalide, but now it seemed completely impossible. With elements of industrial, hip hop, punk, and sometimes harsh, sometimes epic sounds, the album and the concerts that follow the release make a lot of noise in Europe, which bring Chrysalide a lot of attention.

Having previously only released under their own label, Audiotrauma, Chrysalide is spotted by the labels Artoffact (Canada / the USA) and Dependent (Europe), who decide to re-release 'Don’t Be Scared It’s About Life' in their respective territories.

At present, the group has returned to the studio and are preparing the next stage of their work.

The noise guerilla is only just getting started....

Chrysalide album release party at Maschinenfest: "It will be raw and intense"!

Anticipation has lasted long enough, but this Friday, Chrysalide are going to release their third album "Personal Revolution". And as to effectively celebrate this, the band will play their first live show on the same day at Maschinenfest Oberhausen, alongside cult acts such as Architect and Sonar (lineup is here). The group, which is known for its,,,,

CHRYSALIDE demand your "Personal Revolution"

Responses to our announcement of CHRYSALIDE‘s new album "Personal Revolution" (to be released on October 10th) have been great, but what is it actually about -  apart from the fact that we can expect one of the strongest Electro Industrial records this year? Chrysalide have sent us some telling lines:

"Welcome to the 21st century, the century of all crisis.
Political, moral, economical, ecological and individual.
It's not necessary to talk about death, blood, drugs, suicide, Satan or emotional poverty to be depressed, sad or dark. Everything around us is still rotten enough to give us all enough reasons to kill ourselves. But the story does not end that way.

Promo Bild statement
When society as a whole has so obviously failed, power and responsibility fall back to the individual. And I am afraid, this is YOU. This time it is your turn to make a difference, Your turn to be the change. Your turn to be inspired.  Your turn to tell us the plan. Your turn to be brave. We have made ours as a record, not to tell you how to do it but to testify, to share, to inspire you. This is our personal revolution to change our world, our friends and everyone around us. Now is the time to make the first domino fall. Give us your PERSONAL REVOLUTION…"

Chrysalide talk about a Revolution: Personal Revolution out on October 10th 2014

Some of the best hidden secrets of the industrial scene are starting to go overground soon. And it was with a big grin that automatically showed in our faces when we first listened to the master of Chrysalides new album “Personal Revolution”. Not only did the album have BALLS, like its predecessor “Don’t Be Scared, It’s About Life”, it also had a lot of high quality club contenders. So this sonic package that the threesome around the brothers Syco Trauma and Arco Trauma does not only radiate an enormous selfconsciousness and boldness, but also a unique and individual style. While the previous Chrysalide Albums where clearly inspired by the likes of Skinny Puppy, Chrysalide are now relying on their own style and inspiration. And even if “Personal Revolution” has more song-oriented tracks, there is still enough uncompromising aggressiveness here to deliver some serious punches to body and brain. This is the sound that fans of experimental Industrial and Electronic Body Music could probably find a middle ground on, that should please both. And for the dark electronic music scene, this record is a much-anticipated lift for both, face AND spirit, a little revolution actually.

And inspiring a revolution is exactly what this album is about: A revolution that centres not around a random group of people, but one’s individual self.  After all, the 21st century has already ultimately disappointed us: “The Century of all crisis: political, economical, ecological, moral and individual. To sum up: This world is totally fucked up!” (quote from the albums intro “Welcome To The 21st Century”.)
This soon-to-be-classic is released on October 10th 2014 in two versions: a standard 4 page Digipack and booklet, or the Rise Edition, a 48 page hardcover book, exclusively limited to 500 copies, with extensive Bonus CD. Preorders are available NOW: Personal Revolution Standard Edition / Personal Revolution Rise Edition
